Extraction 3 writer Joe Russo teases what’s next for Chris Hemsworth’s character in the announced threequel. After the success of the original film in 2020, Hemsworth returned as Tyler Rake for last summer’s hit sequel.
The Extraction 2 ending paves the way for more stories to come, and Hemsworth subsequently confirmed that a third movie with returning director Sam Hargrave and producers Joe and Anthony Russo is a go.
As audiences await concrete news on Extraction 3, Russo provides an update on the project during a recent interview with GamesRadar. According to the writer and producer, the film is still in active development, and it could further explore Rake’s backstory. Check out Russo’s full comment below:
“Yeah, we’re developing it at the moment, figuring out Chris’s schedule. Sam Hargrave is back directing. It’s an interesting franchise because he’s a very emotionally wounded character, so there’s good storytelling there I think in respect to his backstory, and, you know, his relationship to violence is one that’s built around self-loathing and guilt. And so, it adds a lot of texture I think, which allows us to tell more stories about him. ”
A plot point in both Extraction movies is, obviously, an extraction. In the first film, Rake is in Bangladesh attempting to rescue the son of an imprisoned crime lord, while the second sees him in the country of Georgia rescuing his ex-wife’s sister and her children. Extraction 3 will likely follow a similar pattern, with Rake in a different area of the world attempting to extract a new VIP.
At least several members of the Extraction 2 cast will probably return in the third film, including Golshifteh Farahani as Nik. After appearing in the first movie in a more minor role, Nik was featured far more prominently in the sequel, setting her up for an even bigger role in the next movie as Tyler’s partner. Adam Bessa will likely not be returning as Yaz, however, Nik’s brother, considering his death in the most recent movie.
The biggest tease for Extraction 3 is the introduction of Idris Elba’s new character, Alcott, in Hargrave’s sequel. Alcott grants Tyler and Nik freedom from prison at the end of the most recent film, but only if they complete a mission for him. It’s unclear what exactly this mission will entail, but it could mean Extraction 3 will pick up not long after the sequel’s ending.
